A Dawn Companion

Within my hands I hold a cup
once held within another set
And pirouetted round about
Then formed into a hollow shape
A muddy hand pulled out the handle
Earthenly etched the design in glaze
Those fingers, rough and laden down
with clay beneath his shortened nails
Wisely placed the vessel deep
Within the fiery depths of kiln
And waiting just about enough
Retrieved his art from deep within
inspecting it with keen perception
And, satisfied, set free his work
To be for me a dawn companion
Warm and homey, steam now dancing
Round about, all white and whipsy
Once again embracing earthy
odors with a hint of cream.
